How many times

There’s an old silicon valley proverb that says “it takes many years of hard work to become an overnight success”. Although the startup news is dominated by startups that came out of nowhere and achieved overnight success the reality is that most startups (even, sometimes, those seemingly “overnight successes”) take a long time to get where they are.

Most Korean startups take it to mean that good things take time. The thinking by some Korean startup founders is that building a startup is sometimes like baking a cake: at some point you just need to let the cake bake in the oven, and there’s nothing you can do to hurry it up. This is further encouraged by experienced Korean mentors: successful business people in Korea usually have experience in building businesses slowly and gradually. In the Korean market especially, some processes take years to come to fruition. Unfortunately this type of thinking will lead your startup away from success.

What is true for traditional Korean businesses is not always true for startups. These startup founders that are thinking in terms of baking a cake are completely missing the point of the original “overnight success” saying. Startup success is not about setting in motion a great strategy and waiting for it to rise in the oven. Startups that want to succeed internationally cannot just wait for processes to mature. In the global startup world, results take weeks, sometimes days. Not months or years. If you cannot see a result from an action within a few weeks, you need to try again or revise your direction. If you leave it in the oven, it will quickly burn and become unusable.

This ties into another point that is often overlooked by Korean startups; things don’t always work the first time. Even if you think you have the prefect strategy, it may not work. You then try again, or adjust the strategy. What you should not do, is wait for the strategy to work as if you’re waiting for a seed to grow into a tree. Water, sun and time are not enough in the startup world to grow: you need to actually do things, constantly.

Here’s an easy way to know if you are just idly waiting for the cake to bake in the oven or if you’re actively bringing success to you: for every project that has not finished (from marketing, to business development, to funding) ask yourself this: how many different times did you try it? For example, if you want to get Silicon Valley funding you probably need to meet 50 or more VCs. If Silicon Valley funding is an important project for you, how many VC’s have you met so far? If the answer is less than 50, you know what you need to do.

This works for sub-tasks as well; if getting a meeting is a challenge for you, consider this: it may easily take 5-6 contact attempt until you get a response from a busy person. If you tried to contact someone once or twice, are you waiting for a miracle to happen? Or will you make this miracle yourself by trying to contact them again?

Of course, the answer you will receive will most likely be negative; you should expect 8-9 negative responses for every positive response. If you did not get the positive response you were looking for, how many negative responses did you receive? If the number is too low, don’t wait for miracles: go collect some more.

If you don’t look at these projects as things that take multiple attempts you will be at a serious disadvantage. You will not only give up too early (and miss the chance to get to the positive response) but you will lose to your smart competitor who is willing to work harder. Kobe Bryant takes 1,000 practice shots every single day. According to Kobe, it’s not just to make him better, but it’s also to make him better than his lazy competitors who are not willing to shoot so many at practice. And he’s right: they will go home earlier, and he will win the NBA championship.

How many shots will you take? Start counting them.
