A lie called: “We need more marketing”

It’s amazing how easily rational people like us fall into believing in irrational magic. We have all done this: You read that Richard Branson and Jeff Bezos wake up at 5am and you get convinced that the key to your success is to be an early riser. Or you read something like “7 habits of highly successful people” and you suddenly feel assured that if you adopt these behaviors success will instantly come.

This is especially odd considering how we all laugh when we hear other cultures’ primitive beliefs in magical stones or sacred books, or find it hard to believe how irrational our grandparents’ generation was for believing in ancient superstitions of their era.

But I too often meet startup founders who are smart, knowledgeable and living in the 21st century, and yet still believe in business miracles. Probably the number one idol that is worshiped by startup founders is the golden calf of “marketing”.

Lets start with the sad reality: “Marketing” for a startup who is not already actively selling in their target market is about as effective as witchcraft. Marketing will always serve to amplify (x2, x3 or if you’re really good, x10) a current measurement, but Marketing can rarely turn a zero into a 1 and is unlikely to bring you the first customer just on its own. In other words, if you were not able to sell to the first, second and third customer on your own, marketing won’t help you, and your problem is definitely not that you “need more marketing” because doubling zero sales is not what you are looking for.

This self-delusion is problematic because it shows a more general problem, especially with inexperienced startup founders: it’s always tempting to blame external factors and tell yourself you don’t have everything you need to succeed. The fact is, you probably already have everything that is necessary to succeed, or at least to take the first few steps, but those things require hard work and for you to do things you are not comfortable doing. Marketing, for example, is something every human being with an average IQ and working fingers can do. It will require some very hard work if you are inexperienced in it, and it will almost definitely require you to do things you won’t be happy doing (like talking to lots of strangers and being in situations that are not natural for you). It will also require you to stretch your English skills if you target the global market, and do some research, use various tools and generally spend your time on boring tasks.

I hope all the startup founders reading this will agree with me, that doing tasks you don’t like are necessary for success. Marketing is one of these tasks, and there’s really no excuse for a startup founder not to do the initial marketing, bringing in additional external resources only after some initial traction, and lets be clear: initial traction only means several, paying customers, in your target market.

If you’re not in the ‘growth’ stage, marketing is probably not what you need. But even if you’ve managed to convince yourself that “your problem is marketing”, at least do one extra step and point the accusing finger at yourself. Instead of saying “we need more marketing”, say “I need to do more marketing” and go find out how to do it. Read about landing pages, convergence funnels, search fivrrr and upwork for proofreaders to check the English on your web sites and do the manual, tedious, work of getting the first few customers yourself. Whatever “someone” needs to do, the founder can do – and marketing is one of these things.
